Salinas is famous for being the birthplace of one of the US’ most famous authors – John Steinback. Responsible for literary classics Of Mice and Men and the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinback is synonymous with Salinas. Not only was he born and raised there but most of his work is set in the Salinas Valley. So, it makes sense that after breakfast you head on to the National Steinbeck Center. Inside you’ll be able to discover more about the great author, look into the themes that his novels delved into and browse numerous artefacts such as film clips and first editions. If you visit in May you can join in on the Steinbeck Festival, which has live music and craft beer alongside exclusive talks and lectures of course.

Once you’re done at the museum, why not explore the Steinbeck House and see his preserved childhood home? There’s a gift shop inside to get a souvenir and if you’re there on a Saturday, you could book yourself in for lunch, all served by staff dressed up in Victorian gear. Unless you’ve still got food from the farmer’s market that is!

Enjoy the Countryside

The Monterey Peninsula, California, USA

Monterey is another great place to explore and is one of the most popular destinations in California. If you’re a Steinback fan then Cannery Row, which inspired the novel, is a must-see. You can also see the wildlife by the oceanfront at Monterey Peninsula, such as sea otters and sea lions, making this an idyllic day out. In fact, you might spend all day there!
