Picture the scene. You’ve just found the perfect place to stay in Salinas, after frantically searching for hotels in California USA. Now you’ve got a place to enjoy local amenities, the next step is to decide on how you should spend your weekend in Salinas. We can help with that.
Start the Day at The Farmer’s Market
If you’re planning on a weekend trip, there’s so much to see and do in Salinas you’ll be spoiled for choice. But here at the Good Nite Inn Salinas, we can help plan your mini-break. So, first things first. After a nice rest, head on down to the Salinas Valley and try out the “Salad Bowl of the World” as the locals call it. Treat yourself to some organic local food and stock up with something to take with you for the rest of the day.
Celebrate Steinback in Salinas
Salinas is famous for being the birthplace of one of the US’ most famous authors – John Steinback. Responsible for literary classics Of Mice and Men and the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinback is synonymous with Salinas. Not only was he born and raised there but most of his work is set in the Salinas Valley. So, it makes sense that after breakfast you head on to the National Steinbeck Center. Inside you’ll be able to discover more about the great author, look into the themes that his novels delved into and browse numerous artefacts such as film clips and first editions. If you visit in May you can join in on the Steinbeck Festival, which has live music and craft beer alongside exclusive talks and lectures of course.
Once you’re done at the museum, why not explore the Steinbeck House and see his preserved childhood home? There’s a gift shop inside to get a souvenir and if you’re there on a Saturday, you could book yourself in for lunch, all served by staff dressed up in Victorian gear. Unless you’ve still got food from the farmer’s market that is!
Enjoy the Countryside
After Steinback, head on over to Toro County Park and take in the views of the open country. Hikers, riders and mountain bikers will be active so get in on the action. Or take on one of the hikes – with 20 miles of trails there’s a walk for everyone.
Monterey is another great place to explore and is one of the most popular destinations in California. If you’re a Steinback fan then Cannery Row, which inspired the novel, is a must-see. You can also see the wildlife by the oceanfront at Monterey Peninsula, such as sea otters and sea lions, making this an idyllic day out. In fact, you might spend all day there!
